Periodontal flap surgery very often follows a course of scaling and root-planning. It aims to improve access and visibility of persisting deep pockets allowing better debridement and leads to improved periodontal health.

 

This course is aimed at general practitioners wishing to enhance their clinical and surgical skills and increase confidence in undertaking this procedure. The emphasis of this course is on practical techniques for use on their own patients and what outcomes can be expected.

  • Rationale and outcomes of flap surgery.
  • Techniques for periodontal flap surgery.
  • Hands-on sessions raising flaps and debridement.

Program Delivery

  • Online web lectures via Learning Management System, Canvas.
  • A short MCQ (multiple choice questions) to cement your knowledge on the lecture topics. An additional one hour of Scientific CPD is awarded.
  • Face-to-face hands-on preclinical laboratory session to be on Friday 6 June 2025 (9.00am - 1.00pm) held at the Melbourne Dental School, Ground Floor Preclinical Laboratory, 723 Swanston Street, Carlton Vic 3053
  • IMPORTANT - Please note, that the online content for this program, must be completed in full before attending the face-to-face hands-on sessions at the Melbourne Dental School.

 

Please note: Upon enrolment into this program, access to the Canvas Community for the online learning will be granted by the end of January 2025.

  • Basic techniques in periodontal flap surgery.

 Professor Ivan Darby is Head of Periodontics and Convener of the Postgraduate Periodontic program at the Melbourne Dental School. He graduated with a BDS (1991) and completed his PhD (2000), both from the University of Glasgow. In 2006 he received his FRACDS(Perio). Ivan is a specialist periodontist working part-time in Carlton. His research interests include periodontal and surgical implant treatment outcomes and bone regeneration. He has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and serves as editor of Periodontology. A Fellow of the ITI, Ivan has lectured locally, nationally and internationally.

Dr Susan Wise graduated as a dentist from The University of Melbourne in 1994. She worked as a general dentist for 5 years in Victoria before moving to Brisbane in 2000. Susan studied periodontics at the University of Queensland and was awarded a Masters of Dental Science (Periodontics) in 2002. She moved to Sydney in 2003 and worked as a specialist periodontist and returned to Melbourne in 2005 to set up her own specialist practice in periodontics in McKinnon. Susan has been a demonstrator for and examined undergraduate students and postgraduate students in periodontics. Susan is a Past President of the Victorian Branch of the Australian Society of Periodontology President of the Victorian Branch of the Australian Dental Association.
