The Melbourne Dental School in conjunction with Geistlich is proud to present:

Dr Markus Tröltzsch

Dentoalveolar Surgery and the Medically Compromised Patient

An ever growing and ageing population, in a setting of significant advancements in medical science and surgical techniques, means dentists are now seeing more and more patients with complex medical conditions in an outpatient setting. Existing medical conditions may have an impact on oral health whilst also influencing the way a patient is best managed to ensure safety and treatment efficacy.  Furthermore, dentists generally see patients more often than medical doctors and can play an important role in the early detection of broader systemic disease.  Dentists must remain current with respect to their general medical knowledge and how to consider a patients’ medical history in everyday dental practice.

Diabetes, kidney diseases, anticoagulant therapies, cardio-vascular diseases, immuno-suppression, autoimmune disorders, cancer and cancer therapies, bisphosphonate use, use of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications, etc., are but a few examples of the conditions and considerations clinicians must navigate in daily practice.

Dr Markus Tröltzsch, a world-renowned German oral and maxillofacial surgeon and co-author of the textbook “Medicine in Dentistry (Quintessence Publishing)” will provide contemporary updates in management protocols for medically compromised patients.  As minor dentoalveolar surgery is a common therapeutic area performed by many general dental practitioners, the final part of the workshop will discuss dental extractions and the concept of alveolar ridge preservation.  Participants will also have the opportunity of practicing alveolar ridge preservation using simulation models.

Learning Objectives:

  • How to medically assess the surgical patient.
  • Overview of systemic conditions that can alter surgical management.
  • Understanding of pharmacological protocols, including the role of antibiotic and analgesics.
  • A review of dentoalveolar surgical techniques and post-operative care of the medically compromised patient.
  • The  role of biomaterials in the medically compromised patient.
  • Ridge preservation in the medically compromised patient –including hands-on exercises on simulation models.

Program Delivery:

  • Face-to-Face hands-on lecture and preclinical lab session to be held on Tuesday 5 August 2025 (1.00pm - 5.00pm) at the Melbourne Dental School, Ground Floor Preclinical Laboratory, 723 Swanston Street, Carlton Vic 3053.
