Face-to-Face Hands on Component - Preclinical Laboratory

  • Demonstrations of different rotary NiTi systems

  • Hands-on experience with a range of rotary NiTi systems in plastic blocks, plastic teeth & extracted teeth
  • Hands-on experience with apex location
  • Hands-on experience with obturation of canals using different systems
  • Simple and effective root canal obturation techniques
  • Experience working through an operating microscope
  • Aseptic endodontic strategies to achieve maximum microbiological control

 

Prerequisite: Participants enrolling in this course, must hold a current/valid radiation license

 

Program Delivery

IMPORTANT: Please note, the online content for this program, must be completed in full before attending the face-to-face hands-on sessions at the Melbourne Dental School on Friday 22 November 2024 (8.30am - 5.00pm)

 

Upon enrolment into this program, access to the Canvas Community for the online learning will be granted by the end of January 2024.

At the conclusion of the program participants should be able to:

  • Strategies and techniques for endodontic diagnosis
  • The role of small hand instruments in contemporary endodontic instrumentation
  • An understanding of concepts of working length determination, including the use of electronic apex locators
  • Principles and practical aspects of rotary NiTi techniques and systems
  • Criteria for optimal root canal obturation
  • Current concepts of internal tooth bleaching
  • Contemporary radiographic techniques in endodontics
  • Calcium silicate-based materials in endodontic obturation, perforation repair and vital pulp therapy
  • An understanding of the biology and technical aspects of the restoration of root-filled teeth
  • How to efficiently and predictably manage difficult patients

 

Professor Peter Parashos graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1980 and earned his MDSc in 1989 and PhD in 2004. He is a Fellow and Member of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists and the International Association for Dental Traumatology. He is currently Professor and Chair of Endodontics, Convener of Postgraduate Endodontics and Head of Restorative Dentistry at the University of Melbourne. He lectures extensively and is active in research having published over 90 papers in peer reviewed  journals nationally and internationally.

Dr Luke Borgula obtained his Bachelor of Dental Surgery with distinction from the University of Otago in 1999, and his specialist qualifications from the University of Melbourne in 2005. He was awarded Membership of the Royal Australian Collage of Dental Surgeons in the special field of Endodontics in 2006. Dr Borgula holds the position of Honorary Clinical Teaching Fellow at the University of Melbourne where he has been involved in undergraduate and post-graduate training since 2006. Luke is in full-time specialist practice and is practice principle at Waverley Endodontics in Glen Waverley.

Dr Vivian Liu received her BDS and Graduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry from the University of Adelaide and completed her endodontic specialist training at the University of Melbourne in 2008. Vivian currently practises endodontics in suburban Melbourne and has taught at undergraduate and postgraduate levels at The University of Melbourne, La Trobe University, The University of Adelaide and continuing education courses for dental practitioners. She is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, member of the Australia and New Zealand Academy of Endodontists, past examiner for the Australian Dental Council and is the immediate past president of the Australian Society of Endodontology Victorian Branch.

A/Professor Mark Evans is a specialist endodontist in private practice in Melbourne. He practised as a general dentist for nine years, including three with the RAAF before completing his specialist training in 2001. Mark is a Senior Fellow at The University of Melbourne where he is a part-time clinical demonstrator for the post-graduate endodontic program. He is also an examiner for the Australian Dental Council and has published several papers in local and international dental and medical journals.

Dr Vui Tan graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery and a concurrent Honours degree from the University of Adelaide in 2012. She worked in public and private practice in Melbourne, Hobart and Sydney before undertaking the RACDS Primary Examinations, for which she obtained commendations in all streams and the highest mark in Physiology. She received her Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Endodontics) from the University of Melbourne in 2018 and was awarded the Ephraim Ehrmann Memorial Prize. Vui works as a full-time endodontist in private practice in Melbourne and is also involved in teaching undergraduate students at the Melbourne Dental School.

Dr Oliver Pope is a specialist endodontist in full-time private practice. He completed his Bachelor of Dental Surgery at the University of Queensland in 2006 and was awarded first class honours. Following several years as a dental officer in the Royal Australian Navy, he completed his Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry in Endodontics at The University of Melbourne. Dr Pope was awarded the inaugural Ephraim Ehrmann Prize in Endodontics for best overall performance in the degree. Dr Pope’s research into the clinical applications of CBCT has been published in the Journal of Endodontics. He is in full-time private practice, and maintains significant involvement in the provision of CPD both locally and internationally. He is the current President of the Australian Society of Endodontology, and a member of the Australian Dental Association and the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Endodontists.

Dr Mohamed Amer completed his endodontic speciality training at The University of Melbourne. He has 10 years’ experience as a general dentist and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons. Mohamed has been involved with endodontic research and is involved with undergraduate teaching at the University of Melbourne.

Dr Morgan Wu completed the BDS degree from The University of Otago in 2002 and completed the Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Endodontics at The University of Melbourne in 2012. Since 2011, Morgan has been working in several Endodontic Practices in Melbourne and Sydney and is presently the principal Endodontist at The Endodontic Centre. Morgan has a passion in Endodontic education and promoting Endodontics. He is currently the lecturer and the convener for the DDS Endodontic program at The University of Melbourne. Morgan is also actively involved in the dental community, being the past secretary of Graduate Study Group, a CPD committee member of the Federal Australian Dental Association, and is currently a committee member of the ASEVB, a member of Australian and New Zealand Academy of Endodontists and the Endodontic Society of Taiwan.
