A critical edition of 49 songs with piano accompaniment by Melbourne composer, teacher and conductor Fritz Bennicke Hart (1874-1949). The Irish poet, AE (George Russell; 1867-1935) was the first figure of the Celtic literary renaissance to command Hart’s attention. He set the poems in less than seven weeks in 1918 as seven sets of seven songs (opp. 28-33), a creative feat, certainly, but not an unusual one for this highly prolific composer.

Seven songs op. 28 (1st set): Parting / The mountaineer / Dust / Unconsious / Alien / A new being / The pain of earth / Seven songs op. 29 (2nd set): Mistrust / Sacrifice / When / Momentary / Pain / Freedom / Frolic / Seven songs op. 30 (3rd set): The gift / Winter / Recall / The voice of the sea / The mid-world / Rest / Refuge / Seven songs op. 31 (4th set): Affinity / A dream / The veils of Maya / The awakening / Heroic love / Destiny / Illusion / Seven songs op. 32 (5th set): The dream / Light and dark / Dream love / The vesture of the soul / Dawn / Awakening / The unknown god / Seven songs op. 33 (6th set): Our thrones decay / Creation / Reflections / A leader / Truth / The last hero / Waiting / Seven songs op. 34 (7th set): Janus / Dusk / Inspiration / The great breath / Echoes / Desire / Night.
