This exciting program features broad engaging content, practical case studies, hands-on training, and clinical insights from a range of experts.  This unique program will cover a range of topics clinically relevant to the general dental dentist; these will include diagnosis and topics related to root canal chemo-mechanical instrumentation, as well as cracked teeth, dental trauma and tooth resorption. The program will feature exclusive access to a series of pre-recorded online lectures and immersive face-to face clinical workshops offering the following:

  • Ten pre-recorded online lectures.
  • Two full-day hands-on, face-to-face workshops.

Course Aims and Objectives

  • Gain an understanding of contemporary endodontic concepts and philosophies.
  • Be guided through key elements of the journey from access cavity preparation to the management of root canal complexities, and orifice barrier implementation.
  • Learn current best-practice methods in diagnosis, working length establishment, root canal irrigation, and intracanal medication.
  • Gain an understanding of the management of acute dental trauma, cracked teeth, and tooth resorption.
  • Practise creating conservative endodontic access cavities and location of root canals under the dental operating microscope. 
  • Gain hands-on experience with various root canal instrumentation concepts and techniques, including glide path establishment in calcified and ledged canals.
  • Learn efficient methods of root canal preparation with rotary and reciprocating systems, including use of heat treated instruments.
  • Learn advanced concepts of root canal filling using thermoplastic techniques.
  • Apply treatment planning concepts in real clinical scenarios during a face-to-face case-based treatment planning session. 
  • Participants will also have the opportunity to provide cases for treatment advice from the panel of experienced endodontists.
  •  Interact with presenters to ask questions and clarify concepts discussed in the online lectures.
  • Engage with dental trade representatives and explore a range of endodontic products.
  • Complete practical exercises in splinting of traumatised teeth and management of complicated crown fractures including partial pulpotomy and rebonding of tooth fragment.

Professor Peter Parashos BDSc, LDS, MDSc, PhD, FRACDS, FACD, FICD, MRACDS (Endo), FIADT graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1980 and obtained his MDSc in 1989 and PhD in 2004. He is a fellow of the Royal Australasian of College of Dental Surgeons, the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and Foundation Fellow of the International Association for Dental Traumatology. He was the Chair of Endodontics, Convenor of Postgraduate Endodontics and Head of Restorative Dentistry at the University of Melbourne until 2021. He has an extensive background in private Endodontic practice and is actively involved in CPD programmes in endodontics. He has published some 140 papers in peer-reviewed international journals including 2 book chapters. His main current role is as Acting Convenor of Postgraduate Endodontics at the University of Melbourne.

 

Dr Francis Chan BDSc (Hons), DCD (Endo) Melb, FRACDS (GDP) graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Science with Honours and a Doctor of Dental Surgery in Endodontics from the University of Melbourne. During his studies, he was awarded the Royal Australian College of Dental Surgeons (RACDS) prize for the highest aggregate clinical marks. He has also passed his RACDS primaries examination where he achieved the highest marks in Microbiology and subsequently attained RACDS Fellowship in General Dental Practice. Francis is one of the endodontic component convenors for the Doctor of Dental Surgery students at the University of Melbourne, and also works in private endodontic practice. He serves as a committee member and minutes secretary for the Australian Society of Endodontology Victorian Branch, and is the current treasurer of the Asian Pacific Endodontic Confederation.

Dr David Nguyen-Nhon completed his Bachelor of Pharmacy at Monash University in 2010 with the Monash Scholarship for Excellence and Equity. He then graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery at the University of Adelaide in 2015. After working in private practice as a general dentist in Melbourne, David commenced his Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Endodontics at the University of Melbourne in 2019. During his postgraduate studies, his research on post-operative pain following root canal treatment was published in the Australian Endodontic Journal. David's subsequent research has also led to his ongoing consultancy role in the clinical evaluation and regulation of current endodontic materials in Australia. Having previously practiced endodontics in Hobart, David returned to Melbourne in 2022 to commence his role as the Endodontics co-convenor for the Doctor of Dental Surgery program at the University of Melbourne. In addition to private practice, David also works part-time as an endodontist at the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne, treating public patients from metropolitan and rural Victoria. Outside of the clinics, David occasionally serves as a reviewer for peer-reviewed journals such as Dental Traumatology and the Australian Dental Journal. David continues to be an active member of the Australian Dental Association, Australian Society of Endodontology (Victorian Branch), and the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons.

Dr Teck Hong Oh graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Dental Science with Honours in 2013, earning multiple academic awards during her study including the John Iliffe Scholarship for Dux of the Year, Bertha Bennett and Frances Gray Prizes. After working as a general dentist in Geelong and Melbourne for 4 years, she returned to the University of Melbourne to complete her Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Endodontics. She now practices as a specialist endodontist in private practices in Geelong and Werribee. Teck has been involved with teaching at the University of Melbourne since 2014, as a clinical demonstrator for the endodontics unit in the Doctor of Dental Surgery program.  She currently serves as a committee member for the Australian Society of Endodontics (VIC Branch).

Dr Vui Tan graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery and concurrent Honours degree from the University of Adelaide in 2012. She worked in both private and public practice across Melbourne, Hobart, and Sydney before completing the Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Endodontics) at the University of Melbourne in 2018, where she was awarded the Ephraim Ehrmann Memorial Prize. Vui practises as a specialist endodontist in private practice and is actively involved in endodontic education. She lectures and teaches at the University of Melbourne and is the Immediate Past President of the Australian Society of Endodontology (Victorian Branch) and Immediate Past Secretary-Treasurer of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Endodontists.

Dr. Tom Fenelon graduated as a general dentist in 2012 after completing his undergraduate degree with honours at Griffith University on the Gold Coast. Following 5 years in general practice, he returned to undertake specialty training, graduating with a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Endodontics from the University of Melbourne in 2021.  Tom has worked in public and private practice in Brisbane, Melbourne and Hobart. He also continues to serve as a Dental Officer in the Australian Army and has recently been involved in clinical education at the University of Melbourne and University of Queensland. Tom is a member of the Australian Society of Endodontology, The Australian and New Zealand Academy of Endodontists, The American Association of Endodontists and the Australian Dental Association. In caring for patients, he strives to articulate diagnosis and treatment needs in an easily understandable way and to provide a comfortable and relaxed environment for endodontic treatment. In his spare time, Tom enjoys a range of sports as well as camping and getting outdoors with his wife and kids.
